The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed more than $1.3 billion, was destined for a franchise sequel announcement. We now have it!
Today on MAR10Day!, Illumination and Nintendo confirmed via X a new animated Super Mario World film for 2026. It sounds like it may not be a direct sequel featuring Mario and Luigi in a new adventure, but a new entry set in the world of Super Mario.
The film is planned for release in theaters on April 3rd, 2026 in the US and many other markets, and throughout the month of April in other territories.
Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo video director and producer commented:
”We are now creating a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. We'll let you know the details once we're ready to share more. This time too, the staff at Illumination and Nintendo are working together. We're thinking about broadening Mario's world further, and it'll have a bright and fun story. We hope you'll look forward to it!
The film will be reunite the Super Mario Bros. Movie team including co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and screenwriter Matthew Fogel. Illumination founder Chris Meledandri is on-board once again to produce.
Universal Pictures will distribute the new movie globally.
