Jeremy Renner is in final negotiations to join "The Avengers," Marvel Studios' big-screen take on its superhero team that's being directed by Joss Whedon.

Despite the fact that Universal passed on financing the picture, Paul Thomas Anderson is still working on his next film The Master, about a man who creates a ‘faith-based organization’ that mushrooms into an empire in the ’50s.

Renner is in talks with Universal and director Peter Berg about taking the lead role in "Battleship." He's also had no fewer than five meetings to star in another project, which he declines to reveal. Both films are expected to shoot in the summer, so Renner will be choosing between the two.
