Set in France in 1889, the film follows the life of Dodin Bouffant (Benoît Magimel) as a chef living with his personal cook and lover Eugénie (Juliette Binoche). They share a long history of gastronomy and love but Eugénie refuses to marry Dodin, so the food lover decides to do something he has never done before: cook for her.

Involves the intimate relationship between Eugenie, an exquisitely esteemed cook, and Dodin Bouffant, the gourmet she has been working for over the last 20 years. Growing fonder of one another, their bond turns into a romance and gives rise to many delicious dishes that impress even the world's most illustrious chefs. When Dodin is faced with Eugenie's reluctance to commit to him, he decides to start cooking for her.
