In this debut feature by writer-director Laura Wandel, the everyday reality of grade school is seen from a child's-eye-view as an obstacle course of degradation and abuse. Following 7-year-old Nora and her big brother Abel, we see Nora struggling to fit in before finding her place on the schoolyard. One day, she notices Abel being bullied by other kids, and though she rushes to protect him by warning their father, Abel forces her to remain silent, while he endures more humiliation and harassment by his peers. Transposing the gritty realism of such filmmakers as Jacques Audiard and the Dardennes Brothers to the inner world of kids, Wandel crafts an empathetic and visceral portrait of the cruelty of children, and the failure of adults to protect them.

Kate (Catherine Keener) and Alex (Oliver Platt) and their teenage daughter Abby purchase the apartment next door in order to expand their two bedroom Manhattan apartment. Their only problem is the old cranky lady, Andra, living in it, and that they've got to wait for her to die. Andra is cared for by her sweet granddaughter Rebecca (Rebecca Hall) who has no life, and is blatantly rejected by her other highly cynical granddaughter, Mary (Amanda Peet). Simply waiting for Andra to die becomes complicated when the two families' lives intersect, resulting in a dramatic comedy about love, death, and liberal guilt from Nicole Holofcener ("Friends with Money," "Lovely & Amazing").

Yaron, an elite special operations squad leader, is the spiritual leader and alpha male among his peers, a small, highly trained team that is part of the Israeli Defense Ministry’s Anti-Terrorism unit. Like a band of brothers, these men work, play, laugh, and cry together. They are true patriots; they love their country, their families, and each other. Yaron is ambitious and energetic, but a cyclone of emotions consumes him. His wife is expecting their first child, and the failing health of a team member weighs on his soul as the men contend with an unforgivable accident resulting from a miscalculation during a recent rescue mission, and the price that must be paid as a result of this.

As the story shifts, the antagonists are introduced: a small group of young, passionate, idealist, and politically extreme individuals with their own vision of how Israeli society should be. They see themselves as a Robin Hood of sorts, and although their means involve methods of terrorism, set forth to make their misguided vision a reality. Circumstances swell, and Yaron faces something he never imagined; the prospect of the same sort of evil he works to eliminate taking on the form of his beloved Israeli countrymen. For the sake of his team, his expectant wife, and himself, he must hold himself together and perform his duties.

In a superhero origin tale unlike any other, the film is the incredible true story of what inspired Harvard psychologist Dr. William Moulton Marston to create the iconic Wonder Woman character in the 1940's. While Marston's feminist superhero was criticized by censors for her 'sexual perversity', he was keeping a secret that could have destroyed him. Marston's muses for the Wonder Woman character were his wife Elizabeth Marston and their lover Olive Byrne, two empowered women who defied convention: working with Marston on human behavior research -- while building a hidden life with him that rivaled the greatest of superhero disguises.
