Key Facts

  • Lionsgate is on-board as the studio partner. “For many, many people across the globe, ‘The Resurrection of the Christ’ is the most anticipated theatrical event in a generation. It is also an awe-inspiring and spectacularly epic theatrical film that is going to leave moviegoers worldwide breathless,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson. “Mel is one of the greatest directors of our time, and this project is both deeply personal to him and the perfect showcase for his talents as a filmmaker. My relationship with Mel and Bruce dates back 30 years, and I am thrilled to be partnering with them once again on this landmark event for audiences.” 2025-05-18
  • The film won't be released until late 2026 or 2027 based on current production plan. Mel Gibson told Joe Rogan (1/10/2025): "I’m hoping next year sometime. There’s a lot required because it’s an acid trip. I’ve never read anything like it. My brother and I and Randall all sort of congregated on this. So there’s some good heads put together, but there’s some crazy stuff,” Gibson added. “And I think in order to really tell the story properly you have to really start with the fall of the angels, which means you’re in another place, you’re in another realm. You need to go to hell. You need to go to Sheol."
  • Mel Gibson told Stephen Colbert on CBS' Late Show, the follow-up is still a while away. "It’s probably about three years off, because it’s a big subject,” said Gibson (11/2/16).
  • Mel Gibson hinted at the possibility that Randall Wallace (Heaven Is for Real) could take the helm, saying he “is up to the task.” (SoCal Harvest event interview, 8/31/16)."
  • As Mel Gibson explained, "[The resurrection is] a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at, because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it. I mean, we can all read what happened, but in order to really experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s gonna take some doing (SoCal Harvest event interview, 8/31/16)."
  • Screenwriter Randall Wallace was a religion major at Duke University and says the resurrection was a specialty of his. "I always wanted to tell this story", he explained to The Hollywood Reporter (6/9/2016).
