Marine Lance Cpl. James Blake Miller's Marlboro-smoking face is captured by a photograph and graces the covers of more than 150 newspapers worldwide. The photographer is nominated for a Pulitzer and wins the Sidney Hillman Foundation Journalism Award. The soldier becomes a reluctant icon overnight, but he begins to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder and becomes disabled upon returning to his Kentucky hometown. He and his childhood sweetheart struggle to connect.
