Musician Robert (John Shea) is a perpetual starving artist with low overhead and minimal commitments. When Robert's daughter announces that she's engaged, he advises her against it - his own marriage to Emily (Lea Thompson) didn't last, and he doesn't understand why anyone would want to give up their independence. Yet when Robert and Emily reunite and dredge up old memories and hurts, both discover they have a lot of unresolved issues and that love, marriage and divorce aren't quite as simple as they'd like.

As he struggles to keep his record label afloat, he and Debbie must figure out how to forgive, forget and enjoy the rest of their lives…before they kill each other. In his fourth directorial outing, Apatow’s new comedy captures what it takes for one family to flourish in the middle of a lifetime together. What emerges is a deeply honest portrait of the challenges and rewards of marriage and parenthood in the modern age. Through the filmmaker’s unblinking lens, we follow one couple’s three-week navigation of sex and romance, career triumphs and financial hardships, aging parents and maturing children.

The setting for the film was inspired by the cultural and po litical contrast of the Cold War era and its impact on director Jiri Barta and the Czech Republic. The world of the attic is divided into the land of happy toys in the West and the Land of Evil in the East. The despotic Head of State rules over the Land of Evil with a band of sinister minions, insects and rotted vegetables. When the lovely Buttercup (Vivian Schilling) is kidnapped and held prisoner by The Head (Jiri Labus, with voice by Douglas Urbanski), it is up to her friends - a teddy bear (Forest Whitaker), a mechanical mouse (Joan Cusack) and marionette puppet (Cary Elwes) to cross the international boundary and attempt their daring rescue.

Her closest friend and 15- year-old son, Emmett, is more father than son to his impulsive, ill-behaved mother. Their shared dream: to skip town for California. They've been packed for years. Mussing things up, we discover Emmett's father is likely the older married Mormon sheriff his mother's been having an affair with for decades, and whose daughter Emmett dreams of eloping with. But secrets have a way of not staying so secret, and circumstances surrounded by madness have a way of getting dire. In their bent world a perfectly reasonable solution arises: to rob Virginia Beach blind on the day the President of the United States pays a much-anticipated visit.
