Susan has always been the self-centered oddball in her family, who lazily skated through life with their grudging support until one day she wakes up to realize she’s middle-aged with no job, no relationship, and an increasingly estranged family. She finally decides to take charge and turn things around, but never having done anything herself before, the struggle is real (and hilarious) as Susan becomes the woman she always wanted to be, all on her own.

Follows Ellie Klug (Collette), an unconventional rock journalist who dates musicians. She is given the important assignment of exploring her own past by her magazine's editor (Platt). Joined by eccentric would-be documentarian Charlie (Church), Ellie sets out on an emotional treasure hunt in order to finally rid herself of her ghosts and get on with life.
Separated from her incarcerated husband Bill, Trish is about to be married again. Bill is a pedophile, so Trish couldn't be more excited to have Harvey, a "normal" father figure for her two sons. But when Bill is released from prison and the boys finally meet their future stepdad, the family is forced to decide whether to forgive or to forget.
