Mark Kerr is born in Toledo, Ohio. From early childhood, he dreams of being in the World Wrestling Federation and holds mock fights with his younger siblings in the back yard. He comes a high school state champion wrestling for Toledo Waite. Later Kerr becomes known as The Smashing Machine, The Titan and The Specimen — and is a two-time UFC heavyweight champ, and is widely regarded as the best fighter in the world during his MMA career.

The Von Erichs, real name Adkisson, begin their wrestling dynasty when Fritz Von Erich (born Jack Barton Adkisson) becomes a star in the National Wrestling Alliance, holding multiple belts in the 1960s before becoming president of the org. He dies in 1997. Him and his wife Doris have six sons, five of whom die before their father, which leads to talk of a curse, colloquially dubbed the "Von Erich curse". Today, two sons of Kevin Von Erich, the last surviving brother, are both pro wrestlers with Major League Wrestling. In 2009, the Von Erich family are inducted by Michael "P.S." Hayes into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Miles Teller stars as Vinny "The Pazmanian Devil" Pazienza, a local Providence boxer who shot to stardom after winning 2 world title fights. After a near-fatal car accident leaves Vinny with a severed spine, doctors tell him he may never walk again. With the help of renowned trainer Kevin Rooney (Aaron Eckhart), Vinny becomes a legend when he not only walks again, but miraculously returns to the ring to reclaim his title belt only a year after the accident.
