Janet qualifies for the race in 1978 where she finishes in the top ten, destroying many widely-held stereotypes about female drivers.

Hegar also sues the secretary of defense asserting that the Combat Exclusion Policy (which prevents women from entering direct combat) is unconstitutional, and she wins. In 2013, the secretary of defense repeals the policy.
