The Tender Bar tells the story of J.R. (Sheridan), a fatherless boy growing up in the glow of a bar where the bartender, his Uncle Charlie (Affleck), is the sharpest and most colorful of an assortment of quirky and demonstrative father figures. As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar.
William Alexander Morgan, an American, helps Castro and the Cuban rebels overthrow Fulgencio Batista. Morgan reaches the status of Comandante, the sole foreigner other than Argentinian Che Guevara to be so highly regarded. Shortly after, his motives for being there are subject to suspicion and Morgan is imprisoned. He is charged with working for U.S. intelligence and faces a firing squad. At the same time, his exploits as a rebel soldier lead J. Edgar Hoover and everyone else scrambling to sort out his motives and figure out who he is working for.
The story centers on the rise and fall of entrepreneur John DeLorean. After his arrest in 1982, DeLorean presses a defense that he was entrapped by the FBI and is eventually acquitted. Still, his company goes bankrupt after producing only 9,000 automobiles.
Neel Kashkari, a top US Treasury official, helped develop the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program, which bailed out banks following the economic collapse in 2008. Kashkari subsequently left Washington D.C. and moved to an isolated cabin in Northern California.
