Colebourn nicknames the cub “Winnie” after his hometown of Winnipeg and takes her to Europe, where she becomes the unofficial mascot of a regiment in England. While Coleburn serves in France, he keeps Winnie at the London Zoo and eventually donates her to the zoo. The bear serves as inspiration for A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh character since his son, Christopher Robin Milne, has named his teddy bear after the bear who he often sees at the zoo.
